Q: What is "Dropout color" ?
A: Dropout color means color which does not appear on the scanned image. The mechanism of this feature (described later on this page) is similar to that of copy machines that drop green color in monochrome mode. This happens because copy machines generally use a green lamp for monochrome mode. With the dropout color feature, you can make images excluding particular parts of a document. For example, if scanning a stack of questionnaire printed in red, you can extract only answers of the questionnaire by specifying red as the dropout color. When a red lamp is put on the document surface, no color other than red reflects the light, and when the lamp is green, only green reflects the light. However, as white area on the document surface reflects any lights, both of red and white areas on the document reflects light without distinction when illuminated by the red lamp. This means that the scanner regards the red area as the white area, resulting in dropping out of the red color. Changing lamp colors is one way to achieve the dropout feature. Another is to attach a filter to the CCD used for scanning, or to use a color switching CCD.

Q: What kind of file formats does the scanner make ?
A: It depends upon the application you use. Scanned image data is transferred to the host according to FUJITSU interface standard and passed to the application software through a driver for processing. This means an image data file is created by the application software, not by the scanner.

-

Q: What is required to keep the scanner operating properly ?
A: Periodicly the scanner's consumables have to be cleaned and replaced. Refer to Operator's guide included with the scanner for the cleaning and maintenance cycle. The cleaning tools and consumables can be purchased from one of our subsidiaries.

Q: Carrier does not move and make an unusual noise when powering up the scanner.
A: For the M3093EX/GX, M3096EX/GX, M3093DE/DG, M4097D, fi-4750C, fi-4750L, M3097G, M3097DG, fi-4340C, fi-4220C and fi-4010CU check that the shipping lock has been removed. The shipping lock is used to fix the optical unit to prevent any damage during transportation. Refer to the Operator's guide to see how to remove the shipping lock. Remember that the carrier unit should be fixed by the shipping lock whenever moving the scanner. · When using fi-4340C, fi-4220C or fi-4010CU, please turn the shipping lock dial to the unlocked position before turning the scanner on.

Q: What is the ISIS driver ?
A: ISIS is an abbreviation of Image and Scanner Interface Specification developed by Pixel Translation. This is a software module used to control the scanner and is generally called an "ISIS driver". The ISIS driver provides efficient operation for the scanner and the application software. You can download the driver developed for FUJITSU scanners from Pixel Translations' Web site.

Q: I cannot install TWAIN driver Version 6.x/9.x, and an error message
A: To use this driver, you should install both Mini Driver and Data Source in the following order: 1. Install the Mini Driver 1) When the New Hardware Wizard appears after connecting the scanner for the first time, please specify "D:\Driver2\Setup" folder in the bundled driver CD-ROM to install the Mini Driver. 2) If the New Hardware Wizard does not appear, please right-click on the scanner name in the "Other devices"* to update the driver and then follow the procedure 1) * "Control Panel" - "System" - "Hardware" - "Device Manager..." - "Other devices" Please refer to the "Operator's Guide" in the bundled CD-ROM. 2. Install the data source Select the driver installation from the start setup screen of the driver CD-ROM. Please refer to the "Operator's Guide" in the bundled CD-ROM. Please note that if either of them is not installed, the scanner will not work properly.

Q: A paper jam occurs when scanning from the ADF.
A: To avoid paper jams, loosen the document stack, and slant the leading edge of the documents before scanning. Refer to the Operator's guide for details. Cleaning the scanner may also help avoid paper jams.

Q: Using Acrobat 6.0, I'm getting errors when trying to import pages via the scanner ?
A: Acrobat 6.0 has problems when scanning as follows:

Scanning Black and White Scanning Greyscale Using Auto Page Size detection Scanning using the Flatbed (depends on scanner model)

Countermeasures to these problem have been introduced in Fujitsu TWAIN drivers later than 8.11 (ASPI) and 9.11 (STI)

Please update your drivers accordingly.

Q: What is a WIA driver ?
A: WIA is one of the newer standards for imaging drivers developed by Microsoft for use in Window ME and XP. It stands for Windows Image Acquisition, and is a further development of the earlier STI drivers.

At the moment WIA drivers tend to offer a more simplictic interface and my not give the same level of control over the scanner compared to the STI driver.

Currently Fujitsu does not provide any WIA drivers, our existing STI drivers will continue to work on both ME and XP. Update : Feb 2004 : The 9.11.xx and 9.12.xx drivers contain both STI and WIA drivers for fi-4120C/fi-4220C/fi-4530C/fi-5750C scanners, Both are installed by default. The driver to be used can be selected in TWAIN Select source window.

Owners of M3091,3092 scanners may run into an issue with WIA when trying to install our STI drivers for those products, since XP ships with a WIA driver supporting those products as part of the OS, this will be installed by default by XP for the M3091,92 scanner and this will prevent the STI driver from being installed. The WIA driver must be uninstalled first.

Q: When viewing the properties of the Fujitsu fi-4220cu scanner, ADF is the only option available. Flatbed is not an available option.
A: When viewing the scanner properties in VCDemo after the source has been loaded, ADF is the only option available for the fi-4220c scanner, which has a Flatbed. The problem is with the SetScan.ini file located in the C:\WINNT or the C:\WINDOWS directory. The SetScan.ini file holds the value of which scanner is loaded via the SCSI Bus. The first time the source is loaded, the Configure Device Settings box should appear, asking to choose either the fi-4120cu or fi-4220cu scanner. By default, the fi-4120cu is selected, most users will simply click OK and continue without having read or seen the screen. Unfortunately, once the selection has been made, you are never prompted again to change the scanner model, which would then result in the Flatbed not being available, since the fi-4120cu, does not have one. To correct this problem, simply delete the SetScan.ini file out of the C:\WINNT or C:\WINDOWS directory. Once deleted, load the source again in VCDemo, the Configure Device Settings box should then reappear. Choose the fi-4220cu this time and click OK. Now the Flatbed as well as the ADF will be available (the new data is stored in the SetScan.ini file).
